Trinder’s adapted Volvo tackles the logs in New Zealand

Whilst trawling the internet recently I came across some photos of a machine that has had some impressive modifications done to it, so I decided to dig a bit deeper and contact the company behind these specialist bits of kit.

Trinder Engineers are well known in their native New Zealand for their innovative forestry and transport engineering designs which are specifically manufactured for work in the often challenging timber industry. The machine featured in this blog post has been built around a Volvo EC140C L hydraulic excavator and features a comprehensive list of modifications to suit the needs of the customer. Barely recognisable as a 14 tonne class Volvo, the machine has been specially adapted to include heavy duty guards to protect the vital components during its work inside massive log boats in the dock at Nelson, Picton and also the Ports of Auckland and Tauranga. These machines have had their chassis reinforced and feature protective FOPS cab frames along with the walkways, solid steel doors and reinforced tool box. Also of note is the raised cab platform and the very ingenious step arrangement to facilitate easier access to the cab for the operator. The company also modifies the dipper and route all the hydraulic lines and couplings down through the inside of the dipper to prevent any accidental damage from impact with the timber. The machine is also fitted with 4 heavy duty lifting points on the track frames and also a single lifting point on the main boom, to enable the machine to be lowered and hoisted into and out of the ship’s cargo hold by dockside crane. Much of the modification work is done by Waimea Engineering which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Trinder Engineering.
