Big tractors on the move

Our friend from Down Under Gary Steen has been in touch again to share some photos of some of his company’s big tractors being moved.

Big tractors on the move
Seeing large pieces of construction equipment being transported is always an impressive sight, even more so when it involves some of the largest tractors available. The Caterpillar D11T which has a shipping weight of 37485 kgs and a Komatsu D475A which tips the scales at 108390 kgs when fully operational, had been working on the Pacific Highway project, a 155 kilometre stretch of highway which is being upgraded to motorway status, involving the construction of nine interchanges and around 170 bridges, so its an impressive job to say the least! These two tractors were being shifted to the new Western Sydney Airport project where the initial earthworks will involve moving around 1.8 million cubic metres of earth of which they will be heavily involved in. The major earthworks are expected to begin in 2019 which will see the earthmoving contractors shifting some 22 million cubic metres of material which is over three times the amount shifted during construction of the nearby M7 motorway which was 41 kilometres long. As is the norm for such large dozers the blades are removed for transportation and carried on separate low loaders (lowboys) and reassembled on site. We thank Gary for sharing these images with us here on the Digger Man Blog.
