Moving Marble

A visit to a working marble quarry is an incredible experience, I was lucky enough to visit one in Turkey some years ago during a visit with Hidromek.

Moving Marble
Pondering about the time I spent at the Ozcinar marble quarry in Isparta this weekend, I took to the internet to look for videos featuring these places which make for an incredible spectacle as they carve out giant lumps of the precious stone which go on to be made in to all manner of products. Of course, moving the raw material around takes some doing and this is where the heavy kit comes into play. I was impressed with this footage featuring a Caterpillar 992D wheeled loader equipped with giant forks, ably assisted by a Komatsu WA800, loading the heavy stone into the back of Cat dumptrucks. The video which is courtesy of the Mega Machines Channel, was shot in Pirgon Quarry which is run by the Birros Group and is the largest white marble quarry in Greece, where it is estimated that they produce 140,000 tonnes of block marble per year.
