Too hot to handle

There can be no more demanding jobs for heavy machinery than working in the steel mill industry, while researching for another topic I came across this video from Cat Products.

Too hot to handle
Machines have been customised to work in steel mills for many years, it’s nothing new of course, but it’s still an impressive sight to see machines dealing with white hot slag with temperatures hovering around 2,600 °F (1,430 °C) scooping the material up and spreading it to promote rapid cooling. Cat’s largest tracked shovel offering, the 973K, is a popular choice for this demanding work and the dealers offer specially adapted machines to enable them to cope with the extreme heat. I can only imagine that when these machines come to the end of their working lives in the steel mill’s, they are inevitably going to be in a bad way not only cosmetically but internally too, it takes a tough brand of machinery to stick this kind of punishment day in and day out!
