Unusual French Mecalac spotted

During my recent visit to the Royal Cornwall Show I was delighted to be invited to take a look at an owner operated Mecalac machine which is currently the only one of its kind in the UK.

The Mecalac 6 MCR is owned by Cornishman Graham Sandercock, who recently took what some might say is a very bold step to invest in a machine that is rarely seen in the UK. Graham had obviously done his homework on the machine though and was convinced it was what he wanted for his forestry and general contracting business. Before purchasing the machine he was invited to the company’s headquarters in Annecy Le Vieux in South Eastern France, where he was taken on a factory tour and most importantly invited to try out the machine. Following the visit Graham's mind was made up and he decided to go ahead with the purchase. Officially launched at last year’s Bauma trade fair in Munich, the 6 tonne class 6 MCR might look a little strange in appearance but they are clever bits of kit. Powered by a four cylinder 55kw/75hp Tier 4 emissions compliant Deutz engine, these machines are referred to as skid-excavators, due to the fact that the machine can be used as a conventional excavator or a skid steer loader, which can work at speeds of up to 10 km/h just by flicking a switch in the cab. Look out for an in depth feature article on this machine and its trailblazing owner in a future edition of Earthmovers Magazine.
