Cat on the compact side

One of my first writing assignments when I was lucky enough to be invited to join Earthmovers was a test drive report on the Cat 302.7D CR which took place on a grey day in March 2013.

The 302.7D CR is a true zero tail swing machine when configured without the optional additional counterweight. This makes it an ideal excavator for working in tight spots on our ever congested sites. When slewing the machine, the upper body stays within the width of the undercarriage at all times, enabling the operator to work safely in alleyways, during road works in a lane closure type scenario, and when working close to buildings or over sites, whilst not having to worry about any potential damage to the rear end of the excavator or surrounding obstacles. The machine is powered by the ever popular Yanmar 3TNV76, which seems to be a favourite model for the mini excavator application and offers a power rating of 15.2 kW (20.7hp). The machine tips the scales with an operating weight of 2,670kg (5,886lbs) when fitted with a full cab, making the machine more versatile in terms of transportation costs when used in conjunction with a plant trailer and passenger vehicle. Good friend of the Digger Man Blog and Finning Product Application Specialist Dave Wood explains in more detail the benefits of the Cat 302.7D CR in this video from Cat that was filmed at the excellent Desford facility in Leicestershire.
