Army dozer delve back

I had a great response to yesterday’s post about the Cat tractor heading back to Normandy for the D Day 70 celebrations, so to answer the calls for more period material I have dug into the Digger Man Blog archives for some old shots of Army kit in action.

For obvious reasons the picture quality of most of these old shots is not that good, but I feel it adds to the realism of the period. In this first photo, which has been shared by our Editor Graham Black, we see another example of a dozer on the beach at Arromanches. In this shot taken in 1943 we see two unidentified dozers in action which I suspect was taken during the Italian campaign. This grainy shot from 1944 shows a dozer lending a hand to extract a stuck Willys jeep! The Willys jeep was probably one of the most iconic vehicles from the Second World War with many hundreds of thousands of them produced, many of which still survive to this day. Not sure how well they would have stood up to this kind of treatment though! This photo possibly taken around 1943-44 shows an International TD-14 machine being used for training purposes. These machines were described by the war department as medium or class 1 type tractors. Jumping forward now and a post war shot from 1964, which features a Track Marshall dozer towing a Vickers Onion scraper at an Army training facility somewhere in the UK. Finally in this batch of shots we see a Caterpillar D4C in action with the British Army. Production of this model ran from 1959-1963 and it was a very popular model with the armed forces. Note the the spark arrestor on the top of the stack. A big thanks to all those who got in touch with me about this topic, sorry I don’t have any better photos to share.
