A25G heralds an upgrade at GTR

A new Volvo A25G articulated hauler has been purchased by Dumfries based GTR Contracts Ltd as part of a fleet upgrade and in particular to fulfil new contracts recently undertaken in the forestry and windfarm sectors.

GTR Contracts Ltd is a family run business spearheaded by husband and wife team Garry and Tanya Russell which they established in 2006. The company has evolved into a major provider for contracting services both locally in the south west of Scotland area, northern England and nationally, specialising in renewable energy projects, agricultural contracting as well as forest road construction and maintenance. Adding a new A25G articulated hauler heralds both an up-grade to the company’s mixed fleet of equipment as well as a need to fulfil additional contracts within the forestry sector according to Managing Director Garry Russell. Says Garry; “Besides utilising our own equipment we have been hiring in a couple of Volvo trucks recently to fulfil our commitments on forestry contracts. We felt it was time to make the investment and knowing the overall reputation of the Volvo product in terms of quality and residual values, we decided to purchase one for ourselves.” The A25G hauler from Volvo meets the requirements of Stage IV final emissions legislation being powered by an electronically controlled, six cylinder 235kW turbo charged Volvo V-ACT diesel engine. This features high torque at low engine speeds, resulting in good fuel efficiency, high performance, quicker engine response and less wear, i.e. long service life. Purpose built by Volvo, the engine is designed to exactly match the Volvo drive train, ensuring the best use of power and torque, even in tough working conditions. Delivering exceptional fuel efficiency, it is matched to a torque converter with built in lock-up function and fitted with a fully automatic fast adaptive transmission. The rest of the Volvo designed and built powertrain has been reinforced to cope with the higher torque output of the engine. With a carrying capacity of 24 tonnes and heaped capacity of 15.6m³ with the optional cantilever tailgate fitted, the Volvo A25G has a maximum speed of 53kph. The hauler is also fitted with CareTrack as standard, which is Volvo’s telematics system that enables remote monitoring of a wide range of machine functions (e.g. location, fuel consumption, service reminders etc.) thus optimizing customer operations. Specifically to meet GTR Contract’s requirements, the new A25G has been fitted with the full cantilever tailgate for maximum load retention and most importantly has been supplied with low profile 750/65R25 wheels and tyres. “Having the truck running on floatation tyres is absolutely critical for working on forest roads since the ultra-low ground bearing pressure prevents damage and rutting and lessens the impact on the environment,” adds Garry Russell. The new Volvo A25G joins a mixed fleet of plant including excavators, agricultural machinery, and specialised equipment along with three Volvo motor graders equipped with Trimble 3D laser scanners. GTR Contracts Ltd also operates a haulage fleet and provides a hydraulic hose replacement service for the industry as a whole in the south west of Scotland. The Company was awarded the title of ‘Outstanding Performing Business 2014’ at the 2014 Dumfries and Galloway Business awards event.
