Building on a Great Foundation

We recently visited Terry Harris & Sons a Cornish based family business who have been long standing JCB customers to checkout one of their latest arrivals on the fleet.

Building on a Great Foundation

Terry Harris & Sons has been in existence now for over 40 years, and is currently run by the fourth generation of family members headed by Julian Harris.

The award-winning company is a multi-faceted affair and employ a highly skilled and experienced workforce as they work on some of the most prestigious luxury property developments and civil engineering projects throughout Cornwall.

The company has been running JCB hydraulic excavators and telehandlers for some considerable time, and most recently traded in two JS130LC Plus models for a pair of the latest 140XLC machines which have been taking the industry by storm since they were launched. The new machines were supplied by local dealers Holt JCB, and we caught up with one of them on site in Trebetherick in Cornwall.

Weighing in at 16,170kg the 140XLC takes its power from the Stage 5 variant of JCB’s EcoMax diesel engine which offers a power output rating of 81kw (108hp). Like its larger X Series brothers, the 140XLC features the latest Japanese hydraulic components, with the Kawasaki pump working in conjunction with the Kayaba valve block, to produce silky smooth operation and power when needed in equal measure.

Add in to the mix one of the most spacious and ergonomically operator friendly cabs in the business, it really is a nice machine to operate, and a great environment to spend your working day in.

We spoke to the operator of this machine Derek Beynon, who gave us his early impressions of his new mount, "I find it to be a lot quicker and smoother to operate than our previous JS130 model, it also has more power and weight too, I just find it so much better in every aspect really, I can't fault it!"

Its always great to get opinions from the guys operating the machines on a daily basis, and Derek’s comment is a fitting testament to the quality of the X-Series excavators indeed.
