Classic Cat 988B at rest in China

Regular Digger Man Blog reader Gary Major has sent in some photos of a true Cat classic he came across during a recent visit to China.

Gary who works as the Director of Industrial Design for Chinese based LiuGong, recently visited a yard in the Liuzhou area not far from the LiuGong headquarters. During the visit he came across this old Caterpillar 988B wheeled loading shovel. Being heavily involved in the design process of wheeled loaders himself Gary always has a keen eye for seeing how the design of these machines has evolved over the years.

The Caterpillar 988 was the American company’s first articulated wheeled loading shovel when it was first introduced in 1963. The machine was upgraded to 988B status in 1976. The upgrade included increasing bucket capacity from 6 cubic yards to 7 cubic yards and engine horsepower being increased to 375hp.

The 988 is probably one of the most successful models in the Caterpillar range of wheeled loaders and the latest reincarnations of the machine are still in the line-up in H & K variants.
