Compact and Large – Xwatch covers the full range for Sunbelt Rentals

Sunbelt Rentals has added two more machines to its growing portfolio of Xwatch-equipped equipment, with a JCB 50Z-2 compact excavator and a JCB 131XL SV both receiving the XW4 height and slew control system. The two machines, installed by Xwatch engineer Tom Dacosta, demonstrate how a single solution can support a mixed fleet – from compact 5-tonne units to larger hydraulic excavators – with the same level of protection and operator confidence.

Compact and Large – Xwatch covers the full range for Sunbelt Rentals

These recent fits sit within Sunbelt Rentals’ wider safety strategy. The company formed a partnership with Xwatch Safety Solutions in 2021 to raise standards across its fleet and ensure customers receive equipment that is consistent, predictable, and safe to use from the outset. The collaboration reflects Sunbelt’s view that safety is not limited to machine size; every piece of equipment must be treated with the same level of care, from the smallest mini excavator to heavy civil engineering plant.

Xwatch systems are now utilised across a wide range of Sunbelt machines, including excavators, dumpers, access equipment and piling rigs. The solutions are known for straightforward operation and reliability on site, helping reduce damage, avoid structural strikes, and most importantly, safeguard operators and surrounding personnel. Their retrofit capability also makes them suitable for Sunbelt’s existing fleet, enabling older machines to be brought in line with current safety expectations without taking them out of service for long periods.

While compact excavators are often used in tight, busy work areas, their risks are frequently underestimated. Even small machines are capable of causing significant damage if not properly controlled. Sunbelt has continued to invest in protection for this category, including previous installations on JCB 8026 CTS mini excavators.

The XW4 system installed on the new JCB 50Z-2 and 131XL SV uses proportional hydraulic control to manage height and slew. It provides operators with smooth, predictable restriction rather than abrupt cut-offs, with ramped slow-down and soft-stop built in to prevent overshoot. The modular design also allows Xwatch engineers – including Tom Dacosta on this project – to adapt the loom length and configuration where space is tight, resulting in a cleaner installation and minimal cab intrusion. An optional chassis sensor compensates for machine angle on uneven ground and dual-wall limitation can be added for urban or restricted sites.

For Sunbelt Rentals, the benefit is clear: consistency. An operator stepping from a compact machine into a 13-tonner will find the same interface, the same logic, and the same safety features ready the moment the machine is switched on. For customers, it means equipment arrives on site compliant, predictable, and easier to manage.

The partnership between Sunbelt Rentals and Xwatch Safety Solutions continues to demonstrate how safety can be delivered at scale across a varied national fleet – whether retrofitting existing units or preparing new machines for their first hire.

From compact excavators to larger crawlers, the XW4 handles it without fuss.
