Diggers Intermat highlights (Part Three)

In this final collective round up of my Intermat highlights, I continue with a look back at some of the best machines on display at last week’s event in Paris.

On the demo plot the tiltrotator guys were once again doing their stuff preaching the virtues of the Swedish game changing attachments. On the Engcon stand there was a Hitachi Zaxis 135US demonstrating the company’s EC-Oil system, which allows for rapid and secure changing of a wide variety of hydraulic tools from the operators seat. On another section of the stand an 8 tonne class Kubota KX080-4 was also displayed with the EC-Oil system and visitors were invited to take to the controls to try out the tiltrotator concept for themselves, something that is always very popular with visitors to the tiltrotator stands at these events. Indexator Rototilt also had a large demo plot featuring a Cat 320E L RR reduced radius 20 tonner, a Komatsu PW148 wheeled excavator and a Terex TC37 mini excavator, all equipped with the latest Rototilt models. Highlight of this display was the distribution of Rototilt baseball caps by the product specialist and commentary man who was stood in the bucket. Probably would not get away with that in the H&S obsessed UK. South African Articulated Dumptruck specialist Bell Equipment displayed a prototype of their long awaited 50 tonne class upgrade the B50E at Intermat.  The B50E will in time succeed the world's first production 50-tonner, the Bell B50D, and is a vital part of the second phase of the company's E-series development programme. This phase encompasses Bell Equipment's trucks in the 35, 40, 45 and 50 ton payload On Komatsu’s outdoor demonstration plot the company displayed examples of the Intelligent Machine Control models including, the D61PXi dozer and the PC210LCi-10 hydraulic excavator which was fitted with a hydraulic tilting bucket. Talking about prototypes, if forklifts float your boat, Kubota used Intermat to display a new compact telescopic handler the THT4815. There was no talk of when or if this is planned to go into full production, but I would not be too surprised to see it do so. Back on the MB Crushers exciting demo plot and this Bobcat 870 compact tracked skid steer was in action fitted with the MB-L160 crushing bucket, as part of their all action display team. The star attraction on the Hitachi Construction Machinery stand was the first mass production hybrid wheeled loading shovel the ZW220HYB-5 which has been designed and manufactured at the company’s wheeled loader factory at Ryugasaki in Japan. The ZW220HYB-5 incorporates 100% proven Hitachi group technology from the bullet train and EH-series dump trucks, which has been specially developed for the hybrid wheel loader. The ZW220HYB-5’s four-cylinder engine powers a generator, which produces energy to drive two electric travel motors. When the machine is rolling or braking, it continues to store electricity in a capacitor. Under acceleration, it uses energy by the generator and the capacitor, and so less revs are required when it reaches normal travel speed. According to Hitachi there are four main benefits of the hybrid system: reduced fuel consumption; enhanced reliability and safety; less noise; and easy operation. The ZW220HYB-5’s hybrid system will improve fuel efficiency by up to 26% compared to the previous conventional ZW220 wheel loader. This reduces the running costs – and yet delivers the same level of performance.
