End of an Era for Wheels at Wānaka

The latest and reported to be the last Wheels at Wānaka event took place over the Easter holiday weekend at what had become its spiritual home of Three Parks, New Zealand.

The event has become a must attend gathering for anyone with an interest in classic heavy machinery, attracting 15,00 people in its first year, 25,000 in its second, 35,000 in 2023 and a staggering, record breaking 65,000 + visitors attended this year!

Its not all about big plant and heavy machinery though, as it is also largest all vehicle event with displays of classic cars, trucks and cutting edge earthmoving technology, covering some 24 hectares of arenas and parade grounds, with over 80 trade stalls, bars and eateries.

With this year coinciding with Caterpillar’s 100 years anniversary regional dealer Terra Cat aimed to break a world record attempt for the largest gathering of historical Caterpillar machines in one place, which from the footage I have seen of over 240 machines in a parade, they must have accomplished hands down!

It looks like this will be the last Wheels event in its current format as much of the lad is earmarked for development and its general manager Mr Allan Dippie looking to explore other avenues.

However a group of like-minded enthusiasts are looking at options for holding a similar event in the future, so hopefully the format will re-invent itself  in due course.

Last year, the Wheels at Wānaka Charitable Trust donated an incredible $100,000 to community groups and worthy causes.
