I predict a Riot … We Might Need One of These!

We like to cover things that are a bit “outside the box” here on the Digger Man Blog so for this blog post I thought we would take a look the “the Rook” an armoured compact tracked loader.

Described as an Armoured Tactical Vehicle the Rook, which is based on a Cat Compact Tracked Skid Steer Loader, has been designed and fabricated by the Caterpillar dealer for Florida, Ring Power. The example shown in this old video features an 84hp Cat 287C which has an operating weight of 13,000lbs, but I would assume there are more modern versions available today.

Machines that have been modified for use by the military are always interesting to see and a lot of work goes into the fabrication of them, especially the armouring aspects. This machine for example features bullet proof glass in its fully enclosed, extensively armoured and fully air-conditioned cab. The personnel operating the machine also benefits from a variety of cameras located around the machine which he can view via a large monitor screen inside the cab.
