Komatsu ‘On Grade’ with their Largest Motor Grader

Our anonymous mate from “Down Under” had the chance to get up close and personal with Komatsu’s largest motor grader towards the end of last year.

Aimed at the mining and large earthmoving sectors the all-new Komatsu GD955-7 has been nicely designed and marketed to fit in between Cat’s 18 & 24 models.

Tipping the scales at nearly 47-tonnes the machine is powered by a 6-cylinder Komatsu SAA6D140E-7 diesel engine producing a power output of 318kw (426hp) @1,900rpm.

The machine can be specified with blade widths of either 18’ or the 20’ option. Gary was also impressed with the 16,000hr circle service life, with no adjustments required, all part of the machines built in rugged durability.

Komatsu say that the machine features a long wheelbase and heavier operating weight which helps to achieve high blade downforce pressures which with the more aggressive moldboard angles offers improved penetration and material flow on for instance, hard packed haul roads

Production is enhanced with the efficiency of a direct-drive transmission and lock-up torque converter.

Summarizing from the seat, our man said, “I was impressed, super smooth, quiet & very impressive”.
