Remu Goes Where Others Fear to Tread

I am always intrigued by amphibious excavators, although the very thought of going out on one fill’s me with fear!

Remu Goes Where Others Fear to Tread

There are numerous manufacturers producing these amphibious machines globally, and I have seen many examples at trade shows around the world over the years, but one manufacturer that has always caught my eye is Remu Oy in Finland.

Finland is well known around the world as the “Land of a Thousand Lakes” in actual fact there are over 188,000 lakes in this country, where more than 10% of its total area is actually covered in water.

It comes as no surprise then to discover that such machines are developed and deployed in Finland to make sure the lakes and waterways remain well dredged and maintained. Remu has been a leading producer for many years with their “Big Float” models. One customer who runs an E22 Big Float model is Maansiirto Robin Saari Oy who is based in Etelä-Paippinen.

Mounted on the tracked pontoon with additional Big Float floatation tanks, is a Volvo EC220D hydraulic excavator in long reach specification, but of course, customers can specify whichever excavator they prefer in most cases.

One would imagine you need to have a very different set of skills to master one of these, and as we have all seen on the internet over the years, they can end up in treacherous positions if due care is not taken.

With our good Finnish friend Marko Melto now working for Remu, maybe it would be a great topic for an Earthmovers site visit in the future.

In the video below Saari Oy’s machine is taking a paddle in a lake Porvoo.
