Site dumper safety back in the day

Rummaging through the extensive Digger Man Blog archives recently, I came across these couple of photos that I thought would make for an interesting blog post.

As many of us are aware there seems to be an obsession on sites today with the ever overzealous health & safety personnel insisting that the dumper drivers get off their machines every time they are loaded. I must say I find this whole practice just as risky to the operator’s well-being, having to get on and off a dumper 100’s of times a day on a busy site, with the risk of at least scuffing a shin or at the worst breaking an ankle. One can only imagine what these fella’s sat on the dumpers in these classic shot would think about today’s scenario. For those with a keen interest in the classic kit, the machines featured in these classic shots from the mid 1950’s are a Ruston Bucyrus 19 RB skimmer shovel and two Muir Hill forward tipping dumpers. Health & Safety has its place in construction of course and I’m all for it, but common sense and some kind of reality needs to come back into our industry, before any more people throw the towel in on it.
