STAAD Wheeled Excavator had us all Buzzing at Bauma
Bauma 2025 is already a long way away in the rear-view mirror, but some of the more obscure brands we came across keep popping into my mind, one of them being Dutch retrofit specialists STAAD.
STAAD has many years of experience in converting machines to battery/electric power, in fact the company has already completed over 200 conversions to OEM’s machines of varying sizes primarily from the Develon, formerly Doosan stable.
At Bauma the family run business launched their own new wheeled excavator model the STAAD 17w, which is a 17-tonne, emission-free excavator that requires no conversion, which has been fully developed designed, and produced by STAAD. The machine is expected to be commercially available starting mid-2026.
According to a STAAD spokesperson, the machine itself can work up to 11 hours on a full charge.

“We’ve made it smaller, yet more efficient, thanks to smarter hydraulics and our work with ZF Group on a new electric drive system. That alone saved us 28% in energy use compared to previous models.” “Safety wise if a person enters your working zone, the joystick vibrates gently at first, then stronger, until the machine automatically stops if necessary.
There’s even a ‘drone view’ camera system, providing a top-down jobsite perspective, plus integrated lighting that can be customised to light up the jobsite ‘like a Christmas tree’ if that’s what the customer wants!”
The machine certainly looked impressive and no doubt it will operate effectively too, maybe we will get a chance to try one once they become fully available in due course.
