A decade of digital investment delivers productivity gains for P&M Excavations Ltd

Working with SITECH since 2015, the Omagh-based civil engineering contractor has transformed its operations by moving away from traditional, manual setting-out and 2D laser workflows to a fully integrated 3D Trimble machine control ecosystem.

Trimble Business Centre software has been integral to enhancing the company's workflow, allowing the owner-operators to process field data from GNSS receivers and total stations into actionable 3D models, site design and reports to give them a comprehensive overview of the site.

P&M Excavations now operates a connected fleet of GPS excavators, a dozer with automatic control, as well as machines with GNSS and ATS which are all driven by a single design model in Trimble Business Centre.

Artur Viceconte, Technical Sales Consultant at SITECH UK & Ireland said: "Thanks to its history of technology adoption, P&M Excavations has become a regional reference point for digital construction in Northern Ireland. Starting with one survey kit in 2015, now all of its machines on-site have a rover, which allows the company to continue to deliver work even in a tight-margin, cost-driven market."

A family-owned company, Martin and Peter Dobbs' decision to adopt technology reflects their owner-operator experience, increasing their need to streamline efficiency on-site.

Peader Dobbs, Site Manager and Operator at P&M Excavations said: "Before machine control, everything was manual and your productivity suffers from constantly moving between crews checking levels. Now with the model in the cab we, as operators, can work faster and with increased precision which ultimately benefits our bottom line."

Martin Dobbs, Co-Owner and Operator at P&M Excavations added: "Technology undoubtedly helps us work faster, and with GPS technology we know exactly where machines are working on site. The precision that comes from this technology is what really adds value to our business. We can deliver complex surfaces accurately for the first time which is a great result for the projects we work on."

Seamus Mcllavar, Contracts Manager at P&M has been pivotal in bringing technology to the fore across multiple projects for P&M Excavations, he said:
"As opposed to replacing people on-site, technology allows people to work more safely and be more productive in other areas. Working alongside SITECH has allowed the team to benefit from their expertise, train operators and futureproof the business which is essential."
