Most well known for his scrapers and other more outrageous heavy machinery, American engineering icon RG Le Tourneau was also one of the first to design and manufacture an ADT. His first attempt came along as far back as 1938 with the Tourntailer which was based on his Model A Tournapull scraper design this was, as we came to expect from the designer, not conventional as we know ADT’s today, instead it featured slide out ejection, with the entire upper body moving backwards and discharging the load by gravity. This was in fact way ahead of its time, as we are seeing a rise in uptake for ejection style trucks currently built by Cat today for a number of reasons including speed and safety. Although Le Tourneau's design was not quite as elaborate, it was ground breaking stuff back in the day. There were many more developments and upgrades over the coming years and you can find out about them in this excellent compilation video from our friends at NZ Contractor Magazine which I hope you will enjoy.
