Big Cat is the star attraction from Caterpillar at Bauma

Due to the location I was staying in being a considerable distance from Munich, I was sadly not able to get into the showground early enough to get some good shots of the big Cat. However if there is one thing the photos do show us, it’s the massive interest that the new 6020B machine generated at last week’s Bauma trade fair. I called around on numerous occasions to try and get some clear shots, but at most times the stand was absolutely heaving! 054 The all brand new Cat 6020B has been designed from a “clean sheet” and has been built to work in unison with the company’s 777G dumptrucks, it features a 22 tonne (24-ton) payload and is powered by single Cat diesel engine with a power output of 778kw (1043hp). 056 According to Caterpillar, the machine has been designed for simplicity and reliability without compromising safety. The machine features a new state of the art cab and operator station and offers what Caterpillar describes as “class leading visibility”. This visibility is enhanced by the large floor window, expansive forward windshield and side windows. These large windows offer the operator vastly improved vision down to the undercarriage and pit floor, essential when re-positioning the machine for loading trucks. 057 Unusually in this size class, the new cab design now offers two additional seats to facilitate both a trainer and an observer to sit safely during excavator operations. The cab has been designed following a period of collaboration with mining companies and using feedback from hydraulic shovel operators from around the globe, who were consulted about their requirements and needs for a safer working environment. 058 It goes without saying that the cab features all the usual creature comforts that we have all come to expect these days, including, fully adjustable suspension seat with armrests that adjust individually to suit all sizes of operator, a large display screen that can be tailored in terms of brightness and contrast to suit the operator. A fully automatic climate control systems maintains a comfortable in cab temperature during those long shifts in the mines. It will be interesting to see how this machine performs out on the job site over the coming year.
