CEA retains UK leadership role in international machinery standards

The UK will retain a leading role in developing international safety and performance standards for construction equipment, following an ISO committee meeting in Shanghai attended by representatives from 11 national standards bodies.

The Construction Equipment Association (CEA) was represented by Jason Ong of Komatsu, Chair of the CEA’s General Technical Committee, and Dale Camsell, Senior Technical Consultant. Both attended on behalf of the British Standards Institution (BSI), the UK’s national standards body.

The meeting brought together ISO/TC 127, which is responsible for standards covering earth-moving machinery, and its four subcommittees. Held every 18 months, the meeting allows national standards bodies to review existing standards, set priorities for new projects and address technical issues.

Hosted by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC), this year’s meeting provided an opportunity for the UK to contribute to discussions shaping future machinery safety and performance requirements.

Nine years of leadership

Jason and Dale led the subcommittee responsible for test methods relating to machinery safety and performance. The meeting marked Jason’s final session as chair, bringing nine years in the role to a close.

His contribution was recognised by fellow committee members, while the UK’s chairmanship will continue under Jane Hodgson, also of Komatsu. She will take up the role in 2027, supported by Dale, bringing experience in machinery standardisation and an existing leadership position within the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

Dale Camsell said: “It's important that the UK continues to play an active part in developing international standards for construction equipment. Jason has done an excellent job over the past nine years, and I'm pleased that Jane will be taking over the chairmanship.

“We're also very grateful to Komatsu for its continued support. Having experienced industry people involved in this work means the UK can make a valuable contribution to the standards that will shape machinery safety and performance in the future.”

The CEA thanked Jason for his service and welcomed Jane’s appointment, while recognising Komatsu’s continued support for international standardisation.

Updates for UK manufacturers

Participation in international standardisation gives UK manufacturers a voice in developing the standards that guide machinery safety, performance and testing.

Key outcomes from the Shanghai meeting will be shared with CEA members at the next General Technical Committee meeting, scheduled for 16 and 17 December 2026 in Daventry.

Participation in the committee is open to all CEA members at no additional cost, providing an opportunity to keep up to date with technical standards and regulatory developments affecting the construction equipment sector.
