Classic kit unearthed in Dorset (Part One)

When you have been a family run business for over 25 years, you are sure to have had lots of memories of plant and machinery from years gone by. Mark Farwell Plant Hire have been collecting classic items of plant and steam traction engines for many years and enjoy restoring them to their former glory as a break from the day to day business of running a modern fleet of equipment. Mark’s son Matt, gave me a tour around these machines, many of which are kept in sheds, and some in this first post that are still outside awaiting restoration. There are three of these JCB 3 models lying at rest on the property and the long term plan is to make one good restoration out of the three of them. Another machine that was parked in one of the open ended sheds was this 1970’s Caterpillar 941B’s one of two that the family own that were bought as Ex-Army machines and are still sporting the military drab green colouring. Matt Farwell fired up this machine and it was "on the button" as it roared into life, to be tracked outside for a few shots! This machine has done very little work in its life and only has 1300 hours on the engine meter. This example is also fitted with a hefty looking winch on the back, which has been used on a number of machinery recovery jobs that Farwell’s have been involved with in the past. In another shed we spotted a 1990’s example of a Norwegian Moxy (now owned by Doosan) 5222 articulated dumptruck, which it has to be said, is looking rather dated in design now. This machine is currently in storage for a friend, and I believe it is up for sale. Finally in this batch a nice example of an early Sumitomo based JCB JS300’s which was originally bought by Mark Farwell Plant Hire to work on a job in Dorchester demolishing a large brewery. This machine which for its age is in remarkably good condition is currently up for sale. Look out for my upcoming article featuring Mark Farwell’s modern day fleet of equipment in a future edition of Earthmovers Magazine. In part two of this blog post we will pop inside to unearth some real classic tractors that the team from Farwell's are restoring to their former glory.
