Dangerous demolition halted by Health and Safety

Health and safety executives have been forced to step in at a demolition site in Fleetwood, Blackpool following reports from members of the public that the company carrying out the work was not following normal procedure. Workers at Marine View Apartments were filmed using a girder held by an excavator to knock down the upper sections of the building, sending material tumbling into the street. Local residents were concerned that the company in charge of the demolition had failed to erect protective fencing around the site’s perimeter.

Speaking to the Blackpool Gazette, Fleetwood Councillor Rachel George commented, "I think potentially a partial road closure should be put in place when the actual demolition is happening. There are cars that are worth £35,000 parked on this road." Before adding, "I have spoken to the operators on the site and understand that work has now halted for the time being." Regenda Homes commissioned the work on Marine View Apartments, with plans to turn the 1930s art deco style building into a new block of flats. The company has promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
