Digger Man’s JCB highlights from Bauma

I am currently back on board a JCB JS145 during my day job, for a big South West JCB user, who has remained dedicated to the Staffordshire based company’s products for many years. With a potential new machine heading my way this year, I was naturally attracted to the very latest JS145HD model on display at JCB’s stunning stand at Bauma. The latest JS145 is powered by the company’s own 4.4-litre JCB Ecomax engine, which offers benefits from improved fuel consumption and reduced emissions, this engine also has no need for a DPF system. 071 The all new cab layout looked impressive, with the familiar bank of buttons on the right hand side of the cab now gone, and replaced with rocker style switches to the right of the operators seat, where the heater controls used to be on the old model. A new multi-function dashboard is now included, replacing the old style panel which we have all become accustomed to on the JS range. The new seat looks a comfortable place to spend a shift too, the only downside for me is that there still doesn’t appear to be any air-conditioning system installed as standard in these machines. As an operator, I feel it’s very important to include this option as standard, to prevent operator fatigue during summer months. 073 Also on stand was the new JS145W wheeled excavator, another example of this machine was one of the stars in the demonstration ring during the week. 070 Another machine attracting a lot of attention was the brand new 4CX Wastemaster backhoe loader, which was making its official debut at Bauma. The 4CXWM has been specially designed to perform a variety of roles in waste and recycling yards, making the machine a multi-purpose waste handling tool, eliminating the need for other machines such as forklifts or telehandlers or pallet trucks. The new 4CXWM model incorporates additional length rear stabilisers and a front frame incorporating hydraulic legs. This combination raises the entire machine well clear of the ground, offering exceptional views into a bin when compacting material with either a grapple or compaction wheel attachment. 068 Rollers and compaction equipment are generally not the most sexy or exciting items of kit on any fleet, but perform an essential role on site nevertheless. JCB launched two new large soil compaction models at Bauma, including the 11 tonne VM117D seen below and the 12.2 tonne VM137D. 064 Both machines are powered by stage IIIB/Tier 4 interim JCB Ecomax engines, which deliver 93kw (125hp). These machines are supplied with either smooth drum or pad foot configurations, and feature a compaction analysis system for measured performance.
