Impressive Cat 657’s “Down Under”

In his contact email Don commented that from reading the blog, he had realised that we don’t see that many scrapers here in the UK anymore. In Australia however they are still one of the most preferred pieces of earthmoving equipment, when the going is good and large fleets of these ultimate earthmoving machines are often seen on the many large scale projects across the vast country. Don describes these scrapers as some of the finest Cat “57’s” you will ever see! The machines in question are Caterpillar 657E models which are run by proud owners B&J Catalano Pty Ltd from Brunswick in Western Australia. Don said, “We were working with the machines at a brick companies clay pit just north of Perth, we had to strip off the topsoil and overburden to expose the good clay beneath. Once the clay was uncovered it was stockpiled ready for loading onto road trains for transport to the brickworks. B&J Catalano was established as far back as 1962 by brothers Bill and Joe Catalano, and has experienced substantial and continual growth over the five decades since its inception. The Company was initially founded to service the transport needs of the local rural community in the South-West region of Western Australia. The current scraper fleet consists of 637, 651, 639 and the 657’s, these machines are supported by Cat dozers ranging for D6 up to D11. The company’s plant inventory also includes excavators from various manufacturers from 20 tonne up to the 120 tonne Komatsu PC1250. Dump trucks consist of both rigid and articulated models from Caterpillar and Komatsu Caterpillar products dominate the rest of the fleet including wheeled loaders from 930 up to 992, compactors include 835 sheep’s foot models and a range of Cat motor graders including 16H models. Of special interest to me is the Cat 690 wheeled dozer, another machine we rarely if ever see in the UK. We thank Don for sharing these photos with us here on the Digger Man Blog.
