Is it a wheelie on tracks, or a tracked excavator on wheels?

There are 100’s of these Chinese construction machinery manufacturers churning out kit at an alarming rate and here is another less well-known name producing something a bit different. The, wait for it …. Michael-Shangdong Rhinoceros Engineering Machinery Co Ltd, produce a wide range of excavators and other construction products but none stranger than this machine. The Xiniu X8 is essentially a tracked excavator with a set of retractable hydraulically powered wheels at either end, a similar set up to what we would find on a RoadRailer excavator only with road tyres, this enables the machine to effectively travel to site, do the job then travel back to base under its own power with no need for a transport lorry. Whilst it appears to be like something out of a Thunderbirds script as well as an idea of genius, one can only imagine that the placement of the wheels could cause all sorts of problems on a muddy UK site. Whether these things have been produced in any numbers remains to be seen, but you have to say it’s an interesting concept idea whichever way you look at it.
