Komatsu introduces next-generation articulated dump truck HM460-6

Komatsu is proud to introduce the HM460-6, their next-generation articulated dump truck that represents the culmination of over a century of engineering excellence and innovation.

“Building on the proven legacy of the HM400-5, the newly designed HM460-6 sets the benchmark for next-generation articulated dump trucks, offering a lightweight build, enhanced travel performance, superior fuel efficiency, advanced safety features, and high productivity – all while minimising maintenance and reducing total cost of ownership,” says Juuso Ahola, Product Manager at Komatsu Europe.

At the heart of the HM460-6 is Komatsu's next-generation engine and transmission combination, specifically engineered to deliver outstanding performance while maximising fuel efficiency.

The combination allows for 22% better fuel efficiency compared to previous models, translating to substantial operational cost savings and reduced environmental impact over the machine's lifecycle.

With an increased body size of 25.7 m³, the HM460-6 ensures that target payloads can be achieved with typical quarry material densities, maximising productivity on every haul.

Smart features such as cruise control, hill start assist, waiting brake, and semi-auto dumping contribute to intuitive and safe machine handling, reduced operator fatigue, and optimised fuel efficiency.

Cruise control automatically adjusts throttle and retarder input to maintain the operator’s selected speed. Whether traveling on level ground, uphill, or downhill, it ensures optimal driving performance and stability at all times. If the operator decelerates using the retarder lever, the system maintains the reduced speed once the lever is released.

When bringing the vehicle to a complete stop using the lever, the waiting brake engages automatically to securely hold the vehicle in place. A single tap of the speed-up switch or pressing the accelerator pedal returns the vehicle to the preset speed. This feature delivers safe, comfortable operation suited to any worksite conditions.

The waiting brake automatically applies the retarder when the shift lever is in Neutral and the vehicle is stopped, reducing the need for retarder and parking brake use during loading and dumping.

Understanding that operator comfort directly impacts productivity and safety, Komatsu is proud to present an all-newly imagined cab environment.

The all-new super-sized cabin, increased visibility with reduced blind spots, new deluxe leather air-suspended seat with heating and ventilation, a foldable trainer seat, ergonomically arranged controls, a new digital dashboard and 10-inch hi-res rear view monitor are all there to make even the most demanding tasks feel easier.

Smart Quarry Site readiness integrates the HM460-6 into a fully connected system. Real-time dashboards provide jobsite managers with comprehensive data on fuel usage, operator performance, fleet utilization, and production tracking – accessible anytime, anywhere.

Pre-start checks, operator recognition, and real-time in-cab feedback streamline work planning, reduce downtime, and improve safety, resulting in lower operating costs and smarter, more profitable operations.

The HM460-6 comes with a comprehensive suite of standard safety technologies, including rollover prevention, machine inclination monitoring, preset body height limitation and seat belt reminder system with external green beacon as standard.

These technologies work together to create multiple layers of protection for operators.

The rollover prevention system provides critical protection during operation. To help prevent rear-body rollover during high-speed turning and enhance safe operation, the system continuously monitors vehicle speed and operating conditions, issuing an alarm and automatically limiting engine output when necessary.

During dumping in uneven ground conditions, when the rear-frame roll angle becomes excessive, body raising functions are restricted to further reduce the risk of rollover.

Extended maintenance intervals and centralised service points further reduce downtime while lowering the total cost of ownership. Rock solid residuals are assured through EU Stage V and USA Tier 4 final EPA engine dual-labelling as standard. Ultimate peace of mind is delivered through the Komatsu Care programme.

“The HM460-6E0 represents Komatsu's vision for the future of articulated dump trucks. By combining advanced engineering, operator-centric ergonomic design and digital connectivity, the HM460-6E0 delivers a complete solution that addresses the real-world challenges faced by operators, contractors, quarry businesses, and mining companies,” Juuso Ahola concludes.
