Log handling duties for Volvo loaders

Two new Volvo loading shovels have been supplied to James Jones & Sons Ltd for the company’s log handling activities at its Mosstodloch and Lockerbie sites, located in the north-east and south-west border areas of Scotland. The two machines in question are a Volvo L110H, which has gone to work at the Mosstodloch mill in Moray, and a larger L120H that has been deployed at James’ Lockerbie yard.

An important factor in James Jones & Sons’ decision to purchase Volvo’s loading shovels was the option of adding external axle cooling systems. “The machines work at speed across the concrete pad, handling in excess of some 2000 tonnes of logs per day. So having this option is essential in avoiding axle and brake failures,” explained Log Yard Manager, Iain Gale.

The Volvo L110H and L120H also feature a TP loader linkage system, which is suitable for log handling tasks involving large breakout torque when crowding. Furthermore, the TP linkage system is still able to demonstrate parallel lift whether the attachment is a bucket, pallet forks or log grapples. Both the L110H and L120H are powered by a Stage V, Volvo eight-litre engine developing 190 and 276hp respectively, and maximum torque for both machines is achieved at 1,450rpm. The 1.7m² log grapples have been inherited from previous machines run by James Jones & Sons Ltd.
