Massive Cat 657E auger scrapers at work in Denmark (Blog Post Re-Visited)

Some years ago Lasse was lucky enough to visit the Dankalk Lime Quarry which is situated between Aggersund and Loegstoer in Northern Denmark. This quarry is home to a number of large machines including the two Caterpillar 657E auger style scrapers. Weighing in at around 98 tonnes each, the 657E’s are powered by a Caterpillar 750hp 12-cylinder engine at the front and a 550hp eight-cylinder engine at the rear.

Work in this quarry used to be performed by an old Wabco scraper which we featured once before in a previous blog and is affectionately known as “Olga”, but the grand old lady is now in semi-retirement since the arrival of the Cat machines and only comes out now and again to perform some light clearing up duties.

Working under their own power and without the need for a pusher using the auger system, the Cat machines are capable of shifting 5,000 tonnes of the chalky material per day so long as the ground conditions and weather are suitable.

When the scrapers are loaded they head up hill to the large stockpile heap where there is something in the region of 400,000 tonnes of material which can be used in winter months when it’s too wet to run the scrapers, thus enabling the quarry to still serve its customers with the product.

Check out Lasse’s Danish Construction Channel footage of the machines in action.

We thank Lasse for sharing his material with the Digger Man Blog.
