More on Mustang 220's

Bill who worked for Priestman Brothers as the publicity manager in Hull, recalls how the company used to draw up CPL (Competitor Product Appraisal) documents, following comparison trials of like for like machines from a wide variety of other manufacturers, something that in reality behind the scenes, still goes on to this day, all be it in a far more technical way. In one of these appraisals dated 1st November 1973, the Mustang 220 was compared to its immediate German rival at the time, Liebherr’s R 941B. The sheet which I’m not at liberty to share in public makes for some interesting reading. Pictured above: A Mustang 220 working in a rock quarry in East Yorkshire during stability trials, note the favoured setting of the boom which has been retracted into its second position to offer the best all round stability. On page 4 of this report I was interested to read a list of what the company described as key points of advantage of the Mustang 220 over competitors, containing 21 key selling points for salesmen when pitching the machines to customers. In addition to these points, salesmen were advised of 7 points to watch when in competition for sales with the German machines including the Mustangs faster slew speed, faster travel speed, slew brake as standard and heavy undercarriage option to name a few. Pictured above: This Mustang 220 is fitted with the the optional and uncommon in the day, monoblock boom version. It was interesting to read this insight into how this once famous British manufacturer took on some of the global giants of construction machinery manufacturing back in the day and I thank Bill once more for sharing this material with us here on the Digger Man Blog.
