Morillo Energy Rent relies on Atlas Copco Energy Storage Systems to bring success to a live festival
In an era where emission regulated worksites and efficiency are paramount, Morillo Energy Rent has exemplified innovation by utilising Atlas Copco's state-of-the-art Energy Storage Systems to deliver a successful energy solution for a live festival. This strategic move not only ensured an uninterrupted power supply for the event but also marked a significant step towards more sustainable energy practices in the live events industry.
Morillo Energy Rent successfully provided energy solutions at a live festival. Reliable power is crucial for live events to ensure a smooth, uninterrupted experience for the entire audience. Spain is known has Europe’s leading festival destination and hosts 900 events annually attracting approximately 2 million attendees each year.
With rising fuel prices and increasing pressure to reduce CO2 emissions and other pollutants, the demand for diesel generators is higher than ever. This challenge is particularly evident in the music festival industry, where fuel costs and carbon footprints are major concerns. Miguel Ángel Artiel Morillo, Technical Director at Morillo Energy Rent, explains: "The collaboration between Morillo Energy Rent and Atlas Copco provides our clients in the live events sector with energy storage systems that not only significantly reduce generator fuel consumption but also help them achieve their ambitious sustainability goals."
To address these challenges, in collaboration with Morillo Energy Rent – the rental company responsible for supplying power – the festival organizers implemented a hybrid solution. This approach combined a diesel generator with an advanced Atlas Copco ZBP 120-120 energy storage system to power the main stage. The system is optimized through an intelligent energy management feature called ECO; Atlas Copco’s energy controller optimizer integrated into the energy storage unit. This technology controls generator usage, ensuring it the battery pack operated only when necessary – either during peak demand periods or when the energy storage system batteries required charging – while always maintaining peak efficiency.
The Atlas Copco hybrid system eliminates the need for a backup generator. In the event of a generator failure, the battery continues supplying power long enough for repairs to be completed, ensuring an uninterrupted music festival.
The hybridization of the solution resulted in measurable benefits from the first hour of use. The most notable impact was the 40% diesel fuel savings, which translated into significant cost savings. The reduction in diesel consumption not only lowered cost associated with fuel purchase and transportation but also reduced CO2 emissions (by 40%). This ensured the organizers were aligned with environmental regulations and its own sustainability goals. Assuming a usage period of two months, total operational cost savings would amount to 10,000 euros.
A significant benefit with the Atlas Copco battery pack solution the reduction in diesel generator wear and tear. The live festival went from a scenario where the generator would have run continuously to one generator operating for only 10% of the time., it avoided low-load operation, shifting from an average load of 8% to an average of 80%. In summary, the equipment’s lifespan was extended by minimizing its use, and maintenance costs were reduced by avoiding low-load operation.
This hybrid solution also enhanced reliability by adding an extra layer of security against failures, ensuring a continuous power supply even in the event of a generator malfunction. Additionally, FleetLink, the intelligent telematics from Atlas Copco, enables remote monitoring of the system, allowing for real-time adjustments to optimize performance. This capability not only improves efficiency but also minimizes the need for on-site human intervention. This played an impactful role in the real-time power management of the hybrid solution.
Integrating diesel generators with energy storage systems has proven to be cost effective and a low CO2 footprint solution for operations that rely on diesel as their primary energy source. In the events industry, the benefits are clear: significant fuel savings, reduced emissions, lower equipment wear, and increased operational flexibility.
As demand for more efficient energy solutions during events like live music festivals and more continues to grow, the adoption of hybrid systems like this is poised to play a transformative role in the global energy landscape.
