New electric Hitachi ZX55U-6EB excavator

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV is meeting the growing need for emission-free equipment and strengthening its commitment to the creation of a sustainable future with the introduction of a 5-tonne, battery-powered excavator. As well as zero exhaust emissions, the first Hitachi-branded model in this class delivers lower noise levels, enhanced efficiency, exceptional performance in confined spaces, and fewer maintenance requirements and less downtime than conventional models.

The new ZX55U-6EB operates with exceptional manoeuvrability in confined spaces, reckons its maker, as it has inherited the short tail swing of the diesel-powered ZX55U-6 model. It also provides equally high levels of performance. Customers will be able to work on a broad range of projects with the ZX55U-6EB, including urban construction sites, residential building and waste material handling projects – wherever the environment is a priority.

Meeting customer needs
Customers can choose between battery-powered operation, using 39kWh lithium-ion batteries, and wired operation, which allows the machine to work while charging from a CEE 400VAC 3-phase power source. Utilising both methods ensures operators can use the ZX55U-6EB to work productively and continuously throughout their working day, while enjoying the comfortable cab with air conditioning as standard.

Owners can expect reduced maintenance costs and downtime, compared to diesel-powered excavators. The status of the electric drive system, including battery level and motor load factor, can be monitored remotely. Reduced external sound levels (91dB) allow for greater flexibility for working times and options. Safety is enhanced by the rear camera to monitor the secure connection of the cable during wired operation.

Developing sustainable innovations
The ZX55U-6EB is the first of its kind to be produced by Hitachi. It shares the same concept of the 8-tonne ZE85 electric excavator, which was developed by EAC (European Application Center GmbH), a joint venture between Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd and KTEG (Kiesel Technologie Entwicklung GmbH). Further underlining its commitments to delivering sustainable solutions, Hitachi intends to expand its battery-powered products line-up in Europe in the future.

“Hitachi is delighted to offer our customers a new battery-powered model capable of working productively and efficiently in small spaces,” said HCME President Takaharu Ikeda. “We are working hard to meet the growing demand for zero-emission equipment and listening carefully to our customers’ requirements for improved safety, increased productivity and reduced life-cycle costs.”

Key specifications for the new Hitachi ZX55U-6EB include a 33kW power rating, 5,330kg operating weight and 39kWh battery capacity. The onboard charger has a 22kW output and the charging inlet is a CEE 400VAC 3-phase. Bucket capacity is 0.14m³ heaped while overall length, width and height are 5,520mm, 2,000mm and 2,620mm respectively. Rear-end swing radius is 1,100/1,860mm (battery/wired).
