Reach Further, with a Compact Package

Of course, a sliding dipper arm is nothing new, but in the UK its something we are more used to seeing on backhoe loaders, although I have seen some adaptions for 360-degree excavators, made by the likes of Ulrich Attachments on previous site visits.

But this Hitachi option is straight out of the factory, and according to the manufacturer can enable the compact ZX135US-6 to dig deeper than a 30-tonne standard boom excavator.

The sliding dipper arm extends the working range of the ZX135US-6 considerably to a maximum digging depth of 7,790mm. The upper arm features a built-in sliding cylinder with a 2,000mm stroke. This makes it ideal for river maintenance, pipeline constructions and working on deep shafts. In addition, thanks to the short swing radius of the ZX135US-6, it can fit perfectly in small spaces, which further enhances its versatility.

Hitachi developed this machine to offer customers a much more compact alternative to larger excavators, when working on the ever-congested urban jobsites that we see today. We note that the machine has a beefier looking counterweight, which anyone who has operated an ultra-short radius swing machine before will testify, you would definitely need to cope with the extra reach available, especially with a full bucket for sure!

It’s a great idea and would definitely make this size machine more versatile on the job site, it would be nice to try one out sometime.

Checkout this video where Hitachi Product Manager Wilbert Blom gives us a walkaround of the machine.
