Terex Titan stands proud in Sparwood

At the time of its launch in 1974, when it was unveiled at the American Mining Congress show in Las Vegas, the Terex Titan was the largest dumptruck ever built. Measuring over 67ft long, 26ft wide and with a gross vehicle weight of 1,209,500lbs, the machine was unlike anything we had seen before. Designed to carry 350 tons of material this monster went on to hold the title of world’s largest dumptruck in the Guinness book of records for some 25 years, until the introduction of Caterpillars 797 truck which had a capacity of 360 tons

These days the Terex Titan is merely a tourist attraction, having been donated to the Sparwood district municipality in British Columbia by the Teck Corporation in 1993 following their takeover of the Sparwood Mine a year earlier.

According to my friend Natalie Murphy, Sparwood is like an earthmoving machinery fans haven, as there are examples of machinery to be spotted all over the area. Many of these machines are at work in the mines and all along the journey through Sparwood, there are dealerships who are selling and servicing the big kit involved in the work.

It would be a great place to visit one of these days for sure! We thank Natalie for sharing these photos with the Digger Man Blog.
