Unit Rig’s spotted “Down Under”

Gary took these photos when he was working for a contractor rebuilding kit for some of the local mines in the Hunter Valley area. The contractor was White Construction, which was later re-named White Industries. This company had a huge workshop facility for looking after their own gear and decided to put the premises to good use re-building other companies kit too. The really big Unit Rig Lectra Haul MT4000 trucks in the first picture were new at the time & Gary, being fascinated by all things plant and machinery related like so many of us, couldn’t resist having a closer look over them “after hours”. Also of note in the photo above is the old Komatsu HD 1600-1 in the background. According to Gary Whites also ran a considerable sized fleet of those too. Gary and the team performed a number of full rebuilds on Caterpillar 992C’s 834B’s and earlier model Unit Rig Mk 36’s which were owned by Leamington Coal. Gary is seen in this photo stood in the bucket of the 992C. The Unit Rig Lectra Haul Mk 36 was a 170 tonne model which at the time, was the largest weight category available back in the 1970’s when it was first introduced. Power came for a choice of either Detroit Diesel or Cummins engines of some 1,450 horsepower. Lectra Haul was eventually sold to Terex then to Bucyrus Erie, who were taken over by Caterpillar around June 2011.
