Volvo debuts new machines at Bauma China

Volvo CE used Bauma China 2020 to unveil its first ever excavators to be designed and manufactured in China especially for Chinese customers. The new excavators, ranging from 12 to 90 tons, come in two ranges – Standard and Heavy Duty. The Standard excavator range is suitable for a wide variety of general construction applications and is designed for digging and lifting in urban environments. The Heavy-Duty range, meanwhile, brings high performance machines to the market, featuring lasting durability, advanced technology and low operating cost even in the most difficult terrain.

Ten models will be progressively launched in 2021 across both ranges with the EC380 Standard and Heavy Duty models set to hit the market during the first half of 2021. Among the first to be introduced during the first half of 2021 will be the EC380 Standard and EC380 Heavy Duty excavators.

Volvo CE also displayed two new electric customer pilot excavators at bauma China – the 5.5-tonne EC55 Electric and the 22-tonne EC230 Electric, which will shortly go for testing by real customers in China. This is the first time Volvo CE has developed electric customer pilot machines for China.

Not done yet, the Swedish manufacturer also showed off its 14-tonne EX03 electric wheeled excavator prototype (see below), which is earlier on its development phase than the EC55 Electric and EC230 Electric customer pilots. The EX03 offers the same low noise, zero emissions, energy efficiency and simple maintenance, but includes several groundbreaking safety features. For example, when driving on public highways, a real-time video stream from the front of the excavator will allow vehicles behind to clearly see ahead. When working, a text-based safety screen will alert job site staff to left/right movement and reversing.

A communication live stream will also enable the operator to make eye contact with pedestrians and other works to help minimise misunderstandings and increase safety. While still in the concept stage, Volvo CE is exploring the possibility of eventually trialing a similar version of the EX03 in customer pilots.
