Bad 'Bagger' day at the office for politician

A series of photos are currently doing the rounds again on a number of forums which are more than worthy of a spot here on the Digger Man Blog.

I think this incident actually happened back in 2012, as I recall seeing these photos around that time. The shots feature Joachim Hermann, the then Interior Minister of the State of Bavaria, who had been invited along with other local dignitaries to kick off the construction of a new road in rural Allgau. Mr Hermann was initially given some brief tuition at the controls of a 40 tonne Liebherr hydraulic excavator and proceeded to dig a few buckets of soil. At first things appeared to be going well, however Mr Hermann’s inexperience in operating an excavator was to catch him out very quickly. During an over the side manoeuvre with a full bucket of earth the machine tipped up and one can only assume that the politician panicked and despite the best efforts of the actual excavator operator the machine ended up on its side, much to the horror of his assembled entourage. Mr Hermann was trapped inside for some considerable time, while two of his bodyguards and the excavator operator dug an escape route via the smashed front windscreen. Paramedics took the shaken minister to hospital where he was treated for minor cuts and grazes and somewhat damaged pride! The road construction in this beautiful part of Germany had not been well received by the local residents perhaps on this occasion they had the last laugh after this incident. Check out this video of the incident, apologies for the German sound track.
