Cat’s in the clay pit

Last week I was down in the China Clay pits in St Austell checking out a new dumptruck for a potential article in the magazine, but there was also an opportunity to snap a few shots of various Cats which were on the prowl!

Cat’s in the clay pit
This Caterpillar classic, seen here at rest, caught my eye straight away. This well worked Cat D8R is owned and operated by well-known Cornish plant hire firm Lobb Bros. It’s hard going for any machines in the harsh environment but the Cat’s generally stand the test of time down there! DSC_0513 The machine was then called for elsewhere in the pit and was powered up and tracked off to work pushing overburden in another location at this vast pit of whiteness that often reminds me of a lunar landscape. DSC_0557 Alongside the older bits were the latest dumptrucks to join the fleet, these Cat 775G’s are going to be the subject of another visit in the coming weeks if all goes to plan. DSC_0554 Loading the trucks was one of the three Cat 390D’s that the company took on last year which were featured in Earthmovers Magazine. DSC_0559 Big thanks to Alan Angilley for the heads up on the other dumptruck we visited.
