Cat’s on “roller skates” spotted in Cornwall

Last week I paid a visit to the China Clay pits in Cornwall to check out a trio of new arrivals that are also utilising the Sleipner excavator transportation system.

It’s a fact that large excavators are not the fastest on their feet and in addition track components on big machines can be costly to replace, as such it’s very important to manage the machines movements around site effectively. One solution is the Finnish Sleipner transport system, which are being distributed and supported in the UK by Finning. The first example these systems to go to work in the UK has been working in the Hope Quarry in Derbyshire for the past 2 years but now a second system has been deployed into the giant Littlejohns china clay pit which is operated by Imerys in St Austell in Cornwall, where they will be used to move around the company’s new trio of Cat 390D excavators. The units at work in the UK are E90 models from Sleipners E Series range, which can be ordered to carry excavators ranging from 20–565 tonnes. These systems allow excavators to be moved around at speeds of up to 15 km/h and according to Sleipner can lower on site movement times by up to 85%. Not something you would see every day of course, but the general public were able to see one of these systems displayed on the Finning stand at the Hillhead quarry and mining show in Buxton last year. To discover more about these incredible systems, check out this video from Finning News.
