Liebherr Super Mass excavator 'rocks'

My friend David Wylie who is a fellow contributor to Earthmovers Magazine and superb photographer/videographer, has kindly shared one of his latest productions that he recently put together for Liebherr.

David travelled to Ellon in the North East of Scotland to see the first Liebherr R960 Super Mass Excavator in the UK working at Ardlethen Quarry. The R960SME is an impressive looking machine, as Liebherr claim it has bigger and more powerful hydraulic cylinders on the boom, dipper, and bucket.  The SME machine also has a stronger boom, with internal plating, and a choice of shorter dipper arms - 2.6m or 2.8m - for much higher breakout forces, with a 2.8 meter stick selected on this machine, however, what is really eye catching, is the undercarriage. The R960 SME is fitted with the undercarriage from the next size machine up in the range – the R966 - and looking at the Liebherr spec sheet, the track width is actually wider –  at 3.71meters - than some 80-90 tonne class excavators, and would not look out of place on a high-reach demolition machine! The Digger Man Blog thanks David for sharing this material with us.
