Liebherr’s new 200 tonne “baby” to be launched at Bauma

Shots of Liebherr’s latest offering in the 200 tonne mining excavator class have made their way onto the social media circuit this past week and I’m delighted share the news here on the Digger Man Blog.

Liebherr’s new 200 tonne “baby” to be launched at Bauma
This new 200 tonne machine, the R 9200, which is affectionately known as a “baby miner” will now compete with similar sized machines like the Komatsu PC2000, Hitachi’s EX1900 and Caterpillars 6020B which readers may recall was launched at the last Bauma Trade Fair in 2013. I expect to see this machine take pride of place next to one of Liebherr’s giant dumptrucks on the impressive stand that dominates the Messe Munchen showground at the German machine fest. This new excavator is powered by the Cummins QSK38 diesel engine that complies with USA/EPA Tier 2 or 4i exhaust emission limits and has a rated output of 810 kW (1,086 hp). The machine is fitted with a 12.5m3 bucket which according to Liebherr is the biggest in its class and has been designed to match with mining trucks with payloads of up to 140 tonnes. Some pre-series models have successfully been field tested in a variety of different applications, like the version pictured above in backhoe configuration at work in a mine in Indonesia. I have not found any footage of this machine yet, but check out this video which features the R 9200’s smaller sister machines the R 9100, which was displayed at Bauma 2013 and the R 9150. During my career as an operator I have not had that much to do with the famous German brand, so this trip is going to be especially interesting to me.
