Rare Cat 639D’s at work down under

One of our regular readers down under has sent in some more scraper shots to enjoy focusing on the rare Cat 639D models.

Don tells us that this job was done over the Easter holiday period commencing on the Good Friday night. The job took place on the Roe Highway in Perth, in Western Australia and involved the digging out of four lanes for construction of a pedestrian underpass with all works taking place over night to avoid disruption during the day. One of Don’s mates had his 639D on site and two of his dads machines were also on the job. The Cat 639D is a relatively rare model in the Cat history of self-loading elevating scrapers, initially launched in 1979 it was the most powerful  of its type and featured twin engines which amassed a power output of some 700hp. The Cat 639D was essentially a 633D with an additional engine fitted on the rear and had a carrying capacity of 34 cubic yards. Production of the model ceased in 1984 but as we see in these shots a good number of them are still working around the globe.
