Turkish Hyundai's re-visited

Inspired by me recent site visit in Fuerteventura to see a contractor using Dash-7 Hyundai’s, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look back at a blog post from the Contract Journal era of the blog which featured photos sent in by Turkish machinery operator and enthusiast Mehmet Boyaci.

Mehmet lives and works in Izmir which is Turkey's third most populous city and the country's largest port after Istanbul. Mehmet was keen to explain why Hyundai excavators are so popular in Turkey and showed us many examples working in the city at that time. In this shot we see a 2008 model Hyundai 290-LC-7A long reach excavator at work on a drainage contract. Mehmet said that many company owners prefer Hyundai because they are very economically priced, incredibly durable and very rarely suffer from any mechanical failures. Turkish operators also like the high specification of the cabs which Mehmet describes as being equal to that of most modern cars. Wheeled excavators or "Rubber Ducks" as they have become affectionately known in the UK, are also widely used in Turkey with the most popular Hyundai models at the time this blog first appeared being the R200W-7 and as seen here the R170W-7 which was being employed on hammer work in the city. Mini excavators continue to be popular in Turkey as they are in countries all over the world today and to think that in the late 1970's when they first started appearing people suggested that they would never catch on? Around the congested streets of Izmir the most popular machines are the zero tailswing offerings from Hyundai including this Robex 35Z-7 busy at work in one of the many side streets. These tight and congested areas around the city make the 35Z-7 zero tailswing mini excavators the ideal choice so that the operators can work safely without having to worry about doing any damage with the counterweights that you would find on conventional mini excavators. I suspect the operator of this 200W-7 was enjoying working under this underpass in the shade and out of the heat of the Turkish sun! The Digger Man Blog would like to thank Mehmet for his photos and background information about Hyundai machines in Turkey. Lookout for my article on a Hyundai Dash 7 hydraulic excavator end user in Fuertventura in a future edition of Earthmovers Magazine.
