Veteran Cat dozer still pushing out a good days work

During my recent visit to Essex for the Doe Show I also took the chance to have a look around a few jobsites. On a visit to a refuse tip in Colchester, I was delighted to come across an old Caterpillar classic.

A number of older generation machines were on this site including a D8H and box scraper which was too far away to get any decent shots of sadly. But it was great to see this 1967 D7E which is owned by Gibson’s in action in a fine display of the Caterpillar products longevity. The machine was busy maintaining the haul road into the tip and was levelling out screened hardcore which was brought in from the recycling area by a Terex 2566 articulated hauler. The D7E, not to be confused with today’s current all singing all dancing electric Hybrid version, was first introduced in 1961 as the 47A series, powered by a Cat D339 engine offering around 160 hp. In 1965 engine horsepower was upgraded to 180hp. Production of the E series ended in late 1969 and was followed by the introduction of the F series models. In addition to the veteran Caterpillar dozer, there also more modern Cat’s at play, including this 963C tracked loading shovel. Also spotted on this landfill site was one of Lionel Whitnell’s Takeuchi TB125 mini excavators, who's premises I had visited the day before and will be returning to do a feature on in the not too distant future. Essex appeared to be a really busy part of the country, with plenty of work going on all over the place. I will certainly be returning again soon!
