Cat launches new D11 XE Dozer
Caterpillar has introduced the new Cat D11 XE electric drive dozer, which is claimed to move 5% to 10% more material per hour than the next-generation D11 while consuming up to 25% less fuel per unit of material moved.
The new dozer uses an electric drivetrain with 60% fewer moving parts than a mechanical drive system, with Caterpillar claiming this will simplify servicing and reduce owning and operating costs over the machine’s life. The D11 XE is powered by a Cat C32B engine operating at a lower high-idle speed. Caterpillar says this contributes to up to 20% longer life between rebuilds compared with the D11. Planned repair intervals for the engine, final drives and hydraulic systems have also increased from 15,000 to 18,000 hours, matching the electric drive’s 18,000-hour rebuild interval. Overall, the D11 XE is claimed to use up to 20% less fuel per hour and produce 20% to 25% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than the D11.
The electric drive system removes the bevel gear used in the mechanical drivetrain. The engine drives a generator, which sends power through an inverter to two electric motors that provide power to the tracks.
“The D11 XE is designed to help customers get more from every hour of operation. By combining the proven capability of the D11 platform with the benefits of electric drive, it delivers meaningful gains in productivity, efficiency and lifecycle value,” said Luke Fischer, product application specialist at Caterpillar. It also reflects how far dozer performance has advanced, offering up to 25% greater efficiency than today’s D11 and up to 40% greater efficiency than the first D11N introduced in 1986.”
Designed for easier operation
With no gears to shift, Caterpillar says the electric drivetrain simplifies operation. A dedicated drive motor on each track provides power-turn capability, improving manoeuvrability and pryout force. Both tracks remain powered through a turn, allowing the machine to make sharper movements while continuing to push material. The suspended undercarriage is designed to absorb impacts and reduce shock loads transferred to the undercarriage by up to 50%. Electronic steering, ripper and dozer controls are designed for low-effort operation, while a multifunction touchscreen provides access to machine performance information and operating settings.
Lower operating costs
The C32B uses heavier-duty internal components than the C32, with Caterpillar claiming greater durability and longer life. The D11 XE can achieve similar total operating hours to the D11 with one fewer rebuild over the machine’s life. The electric drive generator and motors are designed to operate through two machine lives, requiring only rebearing and resealing. Major components can also be removed independently thanks to the machine’s modular design.
“Together, these design choices mean fewer service touches and more time available for productive work,” Fischer added. Other changes include a new radiator guard and upgraded case and frame, while larger lift-cylinder trunnion bearings are designed to simplify servicing. Redesigned pin joints with replaceable bearings remove the need for line boring when replacing bearing inserts on the ripper, blade and push-arm trunnions. Caterpillar says up to 85% of parts are common with the D11, helping to simplify servicing through shared components and a familiar design.
D11 technology
The D11 XE is available with a range of onboard technology designed to improve machine efficiency and reduce operator workload. AutoCarry provides automatic blade control during the carry segment and is claimed to increase productivity by up to 15%. The machine can also be equipped with 3D Grade Control, using GNSS antennas and blade-mounted inertial measurement unit sensors to position the cutting edge without blade-mounted masts or cables. Automated Blade Assist uses the machine’s dual-tilt capability to automate blade movement to selected pitch positions, while automatic ripper control adjusts engine speed and ripper depth to maximise productivity and reduce track slip. The D11 XE can also be equipped with Cat MineStar solutions, including Command for dozing, which provides remote and semi-autonomous operation, and Terrain capabilities designed to reduce rehandling and improve grading efficiency.
