Caterpillar to reduce Northern Ireland workforce

Caterpillar is planning to cut 700 jobs at its factory in Larne, Northern Ireland. The County Antrim plant currently employs around 1,600 people, but that figure will reduce to 900 during the next 18 months. In a statement, Caterpillar said this decision was taken to increase “cost competitiveness” and improve manufacturing efficiency, and wasn’t related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Unite Union said most of the losses will be focused at “shop-floor level and at the Product Support & Logistics Division (PSLD) in Larne as well as among management and administrative staff working elsewhere”. The union also said that most of the production lost in Northern Ireland is being outsourced to India.
