Digger’s Bauma Highlights (Part Two) Volvo CE

Dominating the hall was an example of the Swedish manufacturers largest articulated hauler the A60H. The 60-tonne class machine has been hitting the headlines ever since it was launched in 2016 and is the flagship ADT in the range. Volvo were also keen to talk about its Co-Pilot interface, Haul Assist, which now features a real-time tracking map that helps to improve hauler fleet traffic flow on site, along with the efficiency boosting On-Board Weighing feature. The EWR170E Compact Radius wheeled excavator was presented indoors fitted with (TAB) two-piece boom and Steelwrist tiltrotator. This machine also featured Volvo’s Dig Assist system. On the outdoor demonstration plot Volvo were showing the EC220EL with Dig Assist and the new Active Control system. With its automated boom and bucket movements, according to Volvo the Active Control system creates a semi-autonomous excavator that achieves the perfect grade at a touch of a button. Initially offered on the EC220E crawler excavator, but soon to expand more widely through the range, the system guides the operator through the functions in order to automate the digging process. Once the required parameters of the job are entered into the system and the job launched via a button, the excavator automatically adjusts the boom and bucket movements to make precise cuts, follow the desired shape and deliver exactly the right angle of grade – all in a radically shorter timeframe. Volvo’s new Scottish built 100 tonne class R100E rigid dumptruck was making a big impact as a hotspot for a VolvoCE “selfie” with visitors keen to take a snap with the big fella!
