GKD tech for WM Donald’s Doosan excavator

WM Donald, a civil engineering and construction contractor based in Netherley, Scotland, has expanded its fleet with a new 40-tonne Doosan excavator, purchased from Doosan dealer, Balgownie Ltd, based in Aberdeenshire. The new Doosan DX80LC is fitted with a Trimble CB460 control unit transferred from an older excavator. The interesting news, however, is that the new machine has also been equipped with a GKD Technologies 1HLi boom height restricting system, complete with purple roof beacon.

The common way that such systems work is that sensors measure the boom height in relation to the base machine. The GKD approach is the use of a single gravity referenced angle sensor on the boom, which measures boom height from the ground level. Upon reaching the pre-selected height limit, a hydraulic solenoid valve prevents any further lifting of the boom.

The Doosan DX80LC went straight into service on a large residential development project on the outskirts of Dundee, the workload included initial site clearance and earthworks to facilitate the construction of an access road network and attenuation ponds.
