Ice cold in Sweden for elderly Cat

The 18 tonne class Caterpillar 318B was first introduced into the Cat range of excavators in 1999 with models being produced for the European market in France at Caterpillar’s Grenoble manufacturing facility, with machines for other markets produced in Japan. During this time it’s estimated that in excess of 2,000 models were produced before production ended in 2004. This machine spotted in Sweden would be powered by Cat’s 3046 engine, capable of producing a power output rating of 115hp. This elderly machine is clearly used to deal with bedrock which is found in abundance in Sweden. Unusually for Sweden this machine was not fitted with a tiltrotator but it’s understandable in the application that the machine is being put to work in. It was around – 4 on the day when I took these shots and looking at the way the operator was wrapped up inside the cab, I suspect the heater was not functioning! I have to say that would not appeal to me for any length of time in this day and age. Check out this short video clip I took with my iphone.
What this did remind me of was the durability and longevity which is built in to Caterpillar equipment, a legacy that has made the brand famous around the world.
